National Title IX Holiday Invitational Preview

“The continued support of Events DC has enabled this event to make a national footprint raising awareness of the educational opportunities available to female scholar athletes because of the 1972 passage of Title IX and scholarship opportunities available thru the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),” added Janice Dove Johnson, executive director of the Sankofa Project and visionary for the National Title IX Conference and Classic.

How many remember seeing this story onWUSA9 News?

Although we have had hundreds of Title IX Classic alumnae go on to earn a NCAA college scholarship and move on to great career paths, Essence Brown's story is extra special to us. As she said in this interview, Essence looked at playing in the Title IX classic (and being empowered by the fellowship with champions in the Title IX conference) as her opportunity to rise above her circumstances.

She "played with a purpose" and the dream she spoke about in this interview has become a reality . . . she is now playing on the court and attending class at Howard University! Essence is also "paying it forward" by sharing her inspirational story with the younger players. Essence is a true champion in the classroom, on the court and in her community; and, personifies the reason why we do what we do!
